The mechanics used on the levels determine the game tactics and most strongly affect the variety of the gameplay. This article contains a description of 100 mechanics found in the top 30 Match-3 games.
Terms
Elements - the colored elements of the playing field that can be combined.
Combination - the process of matching three or more elements of the same type.
Bonus - an element that, when activated, helps the player to clear a level. A bonus can be obtained by making a combination of 4 or more elements. Bonuses affect objects on the field that fall within their area. For example, a bonus may remove all obstacles within its area.
Cell - an immovable part of the playing field where a game element is placed.
Multi-level objects - the player needs to interact with the object as many times as there are levels to get the desired result. For example, if an immovable obstacle has 3 levels, the player needs to make three combinations next to it to remove the obstacle from the field.
